HISTORY:
Academia San José is a Catholic school founded in 1950 by a dedicated Spanish pastor, Monsignor Felix Rios, with the support of the community and the collaboration of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, New York, now Dominican Sisters of Hope. Located in the historic area of Caparra, Ponce de Leon’s first settlement in the island of Puerto Rico, the elementary school division is comprised of grades
kindergarten through eight. Boys are admitted through the sixth grade. Girls are admitted through eighth grade. The school operates under the guidelines of the Superintendent of Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of San Juan, Puerto Rico and the Department of Education of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. A pastor, a principal, a clinical psychologist and forty-nine faculty members attend to the spiritual, academic, emotional, and physical needs of the students, who are primarily from middle class families. The school offers ample opportunities for students to participate in intramural sports as well as in sports and academic competitions with other schools. A variety of cultural and academic activities afford the students the means to express themselves as individuals and collectively and to develop individual talents and skills. The present
facilities include an administrative office, a faculty lounge, a chaplain’s office, and thirty classrooms. A well equipped and technologically prepared
library with internet access and an information center with volumes, a science laboratory, an art room and two
computer rooms support and complement the academic work. A covered courtyard is used for physical education classes and
sports activities. In September, 2003, San Rafael
Auditorium was inaugurated. This building now serves the entire school community for religious, cultural, academic, and social activities. |
